How LHP Works
A thin laser fibre is inserted into the base of each haemorrhoid through a small puncture. Controlled laser energy is delivered along the fibre, which:
- Coagulates the blood vessels feeding the pile
- Shrinks the haemorrhoidal tissue
- Preserves the surrounding anoderm and sphincter muscle
Because the laser works from within the pile rather than cutting it away, there are no large external wounds to heal.
Suitable For
- Grade II piles
- Grade III piles
- Select Grade IV piles
Not typically suitable for:
- Grade I piles (usually respond to non-surgical treatment)
- Very extensive Grade IV with associated skin tags (may need combined approach)
- Certain complex cases (assessed individually)
What to Expect
Before: consultation and grading of piles, basic preoperative tests, instructions for fasting.
Procedure: performed in the OT under spinal or short general anaesthesia, duration 20 to 40 minutes, same-day discharge.
After: rest for the day, mild discomfort managed with prescribed medication, sitz baths from day 2, return to office work typically 2 to 5 days, physical work 5 to 10 days.
Advantages Over Conventional Surgery
- Significantly less pain
- Minimal bleeding
- No large external wounds
- Faster recovery
- Sphincter preservation
- Day-care
- Less time off work
Realistic Expectations
- Some post-procedure discomfort is normal
- Follow prescribed aftercare consistently for best outcomes
- Recurrence is possible if underlying risk factors are not addressed
- Very advanced disease may need combined approaches
