What is a Sebaceous Cyst?
A sebaceous cyst (more accurately, an epidermoid or trichilemmal cyst) is a small, round, movable lump under the skin. It contains keratin and other skin cells rather than sebum. Common sites include the scalp, neck, face, chest, and back.
Symptoms
- Small, round, movable lump under the skin
- Central punctum (small dark opening) sometimes visible
- Painless unless infected
- May grow slowly over time
- May become red, tender, and drain if infected
Diagnosis
Clinical examination is usually sufficient.
Treatment
Watchful Waiting
For small asymptomatic cysts.
Incision and Drainage
For infected cysts as initial management. Definitive excision usually planned later.
Complete Surgical Excision
Definitive treatment.
- Local anaesthesia
- 15 to 30 minutes
- Same-day discharge
- Small scar
Complete removal of the cyst wall is essential to prevent recurrence.
Recovery
- Wound care with dressings
- Sutures removed at 7 to 10 days
- Return to normal activities in 1 to 3 days
