Post-Surgery Recovery: General Principles

General guidance for recovery after any surgery. Procedure-specific playbooks are available for anorectal procedures.

Answer-First Summary

Post-surgery recovery follows predictable phases: immediate recovery (24 to 72 hours), early recovery (first week), progressive recovery (weeks 2 to 6), and long-term recovery (beyond 6 weeks). This general guide covers the principles that apply to most procedures. Procedure-specific guidance is available in dedicated playbooks.

The Four Phases of Recovery

Phase 1: Immediate Recovery (First 24 to 72 Hours)

Priorities:

  • Rest
  • Pain management with prescribed medication
  • Adequate fluids
  • Light meals as tolerated
  • Wound care as instructed
  • No driving after anaesthesia

What is normal:

  • Some pain (managed by medication)
  • Fatigue
  • Mild nausea if you had general anaesthesia
  • Reduced appetite

What to report:

  • Uncontrolled pain
  • High fever
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Any breathing difficulty
  • Emergency: 9405404492

Phase 2: Early Recovery (Days 4 to 7)

Priorities:

  • Wound care continues
  • Gradual return to light activity
  • Diet advancing to normal
  • Bowel and bladder function returning to normal

Common concerns:

  • First bowel movement anxiety (see Piles Recovery playbook)
  • Wound discharge
  • Discomfort at wound site
  • Fatigue

Follow-up:

  • Day 3 or Day 7 visit as scheduled
  • Photographs via WhatsApp can be sent between visits for any concerns

Phase 3: Progressive Recovery (Weeks 2 to 6)

Priorities:

  • Increasing activity progressively
  • Return to work at appropriate stage
  • Continued wound care
  • Attending scheduled follow-ups (day 14, day 28, day 42)

Typical return-to-work timeline:

  • Minor procedures: 1 to 3 days
  • Laser procedures: 3 to 7 days
  • Major surgery: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Physical work: often 2 to 4 weeks

Phase 4: Long-Term Recovery (Beyond 6 Weeks)

Priorities:

  • Full activity resumption
  • Long-term prevention practices
  • Ongoing monitoring for recurrence
  • Addressing underlying risk factors (diabetes, constipation, weight, etc.)

General Principles Across All Recoveries

Follow instructions exactly. Discharge instructions are specific to your case. Follow them, do not modify based on how you feel.

Take medications as prescribed. Do not stop antibiotics or pain medication early even if you feel better.

Do not skip follow-up visits. They exist for a reason. Skipping them means missing early detection of any issue.

Ask questions. WhatsApp us, call us, come in. Better to ask a "small" question than to worry silently.

Report red flags immediately. Fever, heavy bleeding, severe pain, spreading redness, breathing difficulty. Do not wait.

Address underlying causes. Whatever brought you to surgery has an underlying cause. Address it to prevent recurrence.

Diet After Surgery

General principles:

  • Start with light easily digestible food
  • Advance to normal diet over 3 to 5 days
  • Include fibre for anorectal cases
  • Adequate fluids (2 to 3 litres daily)
  • Avoid excessive spicy, oily, or heavy foods during early recovery
  • Address any specific dietary needs from your condition

Activity After Surgery

General principles:

  • Rest immediately after
  • Light walking from day 1
  • Gradual increase in activity
  • No lifting for 2 to 4 weeks depending on procedure
  • Return to exercise progressively
